History

From Vision to Industry Leader: The OMNI Systems Journey

Founded in 1990 and headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, OMNI Systems has grown to become one of the largest privately owned label manufacturer and the largest consumer of thermal media in the United States. Our journey from a visionary startup to an industry leader is marked by strategic growth, technological innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Serving global leaders, we have established ourselves as a trusted partner in delivering high-quality labeling solutions.

1990 - 1995

1990 - 1995

Founding and Early Struggles: Adam DeFrancesco founded OMNI Systems in 1990 at age 24, starting as a barcode label broker by day while working a minimum-wage job at night. As demand grew, he left his night job, purchased a 7” Mark Andy 820 press, and ran the business on a tight budget. Within five years, OMNI added five more presses to supply barcode labels to retail consumer products.

OMNI Systems was founded with a clear vision: to enhance supply chain efficiency for major retailers. By ensuring all incoming shipments included barcode labels, OMNI streamlined inventory management, reduced errors, and minimized delays—creating value for both suppliers and retailers.

Expansion & Production Surge: OMNI Systems expanded its Richmond Heights facility to 25,000 sq. ft. and prepared to add a third shift to meet rising demand—boosting annual label production from 43 million to 60 million. Employment grew across four U.S. service centers, and sales rose by 50% year-over-year.

Growth and Clients: By 1999, OMNI Systems had grown significantly, securing major clients like Wal-Mart, Kmart, Goodyear, Hershey Foods, and American Greetings. The company provided barcode labels, anti-theft tags, and radio-frequency tracking devices, operating debt-free with just 30 employees, including family members.

Innovation and Challenges: OMNI focused on "just-in-time" manufacturing with minimal inventory, a strategy shaped by DeFrancesco's earlier failure in a travel accessory catalog business at age 19, which led to a $11,000 debt and personal bankruptcy. In 1999, OMNI was exploring new growth areas, such as tiny anti-theft labels for athletic shoes and cellular phones, and radio-frequency barcodes for tracking through materials.

Anti-Theft Market Entry: OMNI partnered with Sensormatic Electronics Corp. to distribute anti-theft tags, embedding them in barcode labels for retail clients like Wal-Mart. This innovation reduced shoplifting losses (estimated at $9 billion annually in retail) and saved retailers time by integrating tags into packaging.

Significance: This partnership expanded OMNI Systems’ product offerings and solidified OMNI’s role in retail logistics.

Recognition: Adam DeFrancesco was named one of Crain’s Cleveland Business "40 Under 40" at age 35, recognizing his leadership and success in building OMNI Systems. This recognition highlights OMNI Systems’ early success and DeFrancesco’s resilience, positioning them as a competitive player against larger, publicly held companies.

OMNI Wins Major Contract: OMNI Systems secured a contract with a major internet-based bookseller to produce 60 million bar-coded labels over the next year, with 30 million needed between October 1 and December 31, 2000, for the holiday shopping season.

Growth: To meet this demand, OMNI Systems expanded their Richmond Heights plant by 60%, from 25,000 to 40,000 square feet, hired additional employees (bringing the total to 49), and leased additional warehouse spaces in Reno, NV, and Philadelphia, PA, expanding their distribution network alongside existing facilities in Raleigh, NC. By this time, OMNI had 12 presses to meet customer demands.

Significance: This expansion marked OMNI Systems’ early growth in scale and geographic reach, supporting their ability to serve national clients efficiently.

Growth: OMNI Systems had grown significantly from its 1990 founding, serving major clients and maintaining a debt-free operation, a testament to DeFrancesco’s conservative debt management philosophy. The company operated multiple distribution centers across the U.S., including the space where the current HQ is located, employed a growing workforce, and produced hundreds of millions of labels annually.

Recognition: Adam DeFrancesco received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Ohio region, recognizing his leadership in building OMNI Systems. This prestigious accolade is presented annually to the most successful and innovative entrepreneurial business leaders in more than 30 countries around the globe.

OMNI has expanded its capabilities by adding its seventh Mark Andy press since 2019, all equipped with Martin Automatic MBs unwind/splicers, nearing 50 Mark Andy presses total. This impressive fleet of presses boasts a wide range of printing widths, from 180mm to 5210mm. Notably, one of the fleets maintained a consistent production run of the same job for over 10 years, 24/7, demonstrating reliability with only minor color variations.

Initially thriving in simple one-, two-, and three-color jobs, OMNI listened to its customers’ evolving needs and effectively transitioned into prime labels. This shift transitioned OMNI to a comprehensive, single-source manufacturer to meet the growing demands of its client base.

Two Acquisitions: In April, OMNI broadened its business reach by acquiring ITW Labels, a subsidiary of Illinois Tool Works, a notable industrial firm based in the Chicago area. With a history spanning over 110 years, Illinois Tool Works operates in several locations, including St. Charles, Missouri, Gardner, Kansas, and Bogart, Georgia.

This acquisition enabled OMNI to offer a wider range of label printing services tailored for commercial clients, including some of the world’s leading brands. ITW Labels was recognized nationally for high-quality converting operations, producing both custom and stock labels designed for various markets, such as Consumer Packaged Goods, Durable, and Retail. Their clientele included well-established brands like Husqvarna Group, General Mills, and PepsiCo, which benefit from vibrant, true-to-brand colors and robust printing that withstands extensive usage.

In December, OMNI announced its second acquisition of the year by acquiring Honeywell Media. This company specialized in a variety of media products, such as barcode labels, media tags, receipt paper, thermal media, RFID labels, and patient wristbands.

With these two acquisitions, OMNI has significantly expanded its geographical presence, and the addition of experienced employees and advanced printing equipment has enriched its product offerings. This shift in strategy illustrates OMNI's transition from a focus solely on organic growth, which was centered in suburban Cleveland, to a more diverse growth approach. By integrating both ITW Labels and Honeywell Media into its operations, OMNI has strengthened its capabilities and broadened its market influence.

Recognition: Ranked #40th on Printing Impressions Top 300 Printers List, Top 5 in growth, year-over-year, in the Top 40 of the largest privately-owned label-focused manufacturer, and still holds the #1 spot for the largest privately owned thermal label manufacturer in North America.

This move was part of OMNI’s strategic expansion plan, aiming to grow its local workforce to 100 employees over the next several years. Key roles in demand include positions in press operations, quality control, and leadership within production.

To ensure convenience for its employees, OMNI remained committed to the same vicinity as their previous location, prioritizing similar commute times. They actively sought employee input on location preferences, demonstrating a focus on workforce satisfaction. In June, OMNI celebrated the grand opening of a new 64,000-square-foot facility in St. Charles, reflecting a significant investment with a buildout cost of approximately $3 million. This new site dubbed as the OMNI Print Center of Excellence marks a pivotal development in OMNI's growth journey.
